AHE June 2025 Newsletter

Jun 02, 2025

Principal’s Message

June has snuck up so quickly!  At this time of year, we spend time checking our progress on our school goals and thinking about our next steps.

The growth in student understanding of “What a Mathematician Does”, is inspiring: changing from “they use their brain” in September to “They connect real life to math or have strategies for different things” in May. The addition of our Number Crunchers club at lunch recess and the Numeracy Lab where students can come and share their love for numbers is bringing us closer to our goal of “Building a Thriving Community of Mathematical Thinkers who can Think, Communicate and Problem Solve.

Our Literacy Goal for the year: “To Nurture a Love for Literacy” has been realized with Battle of the Books, Bobfest, Author visits, the Reading Matches Running Challenge and numerous classroom based activities.

Finally, our Social/Emotional Goal of “Fostering a Sense of Belonging and Social Awareness in Our School Community” provided an umbrella for our work on Inclusion, Truth and Reconciliation, Stewardship and Connection. Our monthly Buddy Activities, Spirit Days, School Clubs, Outdoor Education, Special Projects such as the Hope-a-Scope and Sports Teams have been spent taking steps towards this goal.

It has been a privilege to work with such a caring and enthusiastic group of students, parents and teachers this year. Wishing everyone within the AHE family an action-packed June and a relaxing summer holiday.

Mrs. Pam Mair

Hope-a-Scope

Ms. Vickers’ Grade 2/3’s and Ms. Johnson’s grade 6’s were able to see their hard work come to fruition with the unveiling of the Hope-a-Scope this week. Working alongside ROAM artists, Jess Leahey, Turbo Bambi and Rob Buchanan, the students were delighted to have their thoughts and dreams for Revelstoke’s future incorporated into a kaleidoscopic art telescope.

The Hope-a-Scope will be mounted at the top of the Stellar Chair at Revelstoke Mountain Resort pointed towards Mt. Begbie. Our proud students can’t wait to see it in its final spot!

Special thanks to Rob Buchanan, Jess Leahey, Turbo Bambi for setting up the Hope-a-Scope on the school grounds so we could all give it a try, and to our AHE PAC for contributing to the project.

Intergenerational Learning

June 1st is a day to bring awareness to the vast range of mental and physical health benefits that arise when older adults, children and youth are intentionally and respectfully connected.

If you already are involved in an Intergenerational Relationship, share it and celebrate!

If you do not have an older or younger friend, start a new friendship with one of these ideas:

– Simply say hello to a youth or older person passing by

– Reach out to assist or recognize a child or a senior

– Check in with a call to an older or younger relative or friend

– Deliver a card, note, flower or treat

– Offer to share your expertise or lived-knowledge with a school or senior group

Our grade 5/6 class, under the guidance of Ms. Gadbois has developed a year long relationship with seniors at Begbie Manor. They meet twice a month and engage in many activities including arts and crafts, traditional games, and reading. In the words of one of our grade 6 students, “I think this topic is important because it fosters stronger communities and breaks down stereoptypes”.

Go By Bike

June 2nd-6th is Go by Bike Week! Some classes are signed up to count kilometres in an effort to win a class prize from Go By Bike, however, every student can participate by biking, walking or scootering to school. We will be recognizing those getting to school on their own power as well as noticing those following the expectations for bikes on the school ground and bike safety. Prizes include bike locks, t-shirts, stickers and water bottles and will be drawn on Friday June 6th.

PAC News

It’s been another amazing year at AHE and PAC would like to extend a big thanks to everyone who helped make this year such a success. To our amazing PAC Board and all the volunteers who pitched in at our 10 hot lunches, the Christmas Craft Fair, and the Scholastic Book Fair—thank you! We couldn’t have done it without your time, energy, and support.

We would like to thank Emo’s Pizza, Save on Foods, Kawakubo Sushi and Subway for always supporting our hot lunches and making them all a massive success.

We’re already looking ahead to next year and are looking for new PAC board members! If you love AHE and want to get involved, we’d love to have you join us!

Before we wrap up another wonderful school year, please join us for our last meeting of the school year this Monday June 2nd at 6:30pm in the AHE Library. As always child care will be provided. We invite all parents, caregivers and grandparents to attend the meetings.

Thanks everyone for another successful school year. Have a great summer!!!

Grade 7 Leaving Celebration

Our Grade 7 crew thoroughly enjoyed their two days at Sunny Brae connecting with the other grade 7 students in the district. Thank you to our parent volunteers and teachers who made the trip possible! Our Grade 7 students will be moving on to Revelstoke Secondary next year and we are ready to celebrate their time at Arrow Heights. On June 17th, Arrow Heights will be hosting a Leaving Celebration at 6pm. Our celebration theme is “Spring Flowers”. Families are invited to attend to help send these students off to RSS.

Best of luck to all our students in their future endeavors. We will miss you at AHE!

Kindergarten Orientation

The year has flown by so quickly and our current Kindergarten kids are about to fly the coop and be our AHE grade ones! New Kindergarten students will be coming to AHE on June 12th for an orientation session with Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Mair and District staff. Our current Kindergarten students in Ms. Tedesco’s class will be dismissed at 11:30 on June 12th.

Yearbook

Yearbook order forms have been handed out and the deadline for ordering is Monday, June 2nd. Yearbooks must be pre-ordered if you would like a copy. Thank you to Ms Draboczi and her group of helpful students who have worked hard to create a colourful masterpiece of memories.

Indigenous Education

Save the date June 4th for the Spring Family Gathering and Milestone Celebration. Indigenous families are invited to gather by the Lodge (Tipi) to share lunch and to celebrate students who are new to the district, making the transition from elementary to high school, and those who are graduating. Students who are participating will be transported to and from by bus.

C.A.R.E.S.

Following C.A.R.E.S. daily at AHE, along with monthly themes and weekly focus, helps students have a shared understanding of how our community supports one another and promotes connectedness. Our staff takes a collective, shared approach to owning all students as their own. Students are recognized daily for following our school-wide expectations with CARES Cards that are handed out by staff members and read out over the morning announcements. Students then “pay it forward” by placing their CARES cards in a collection for one of our two charities: Trees for Tots and The Revelstoke District Health Foundation.

At our final assembly on June 26th at 11:30, representatives from each organization will be in attendance to receive a cheque from AHE.

Well done AHE students!

Renovations at A.H.E.

Many of our classrooms and the front entry to our school are undergoing renovations starting the first week of July! All renovations are expected to be completed prior to the start of the 2025-26 school year, so we can return to a fresh new look! Please excuse us as we start taking down displays and packing up shelves that aren’t currently in use so contractors can get right to work once we vacate for summer holidays! Next week, you will see a new addition to our school site: a Sea-Can for storage as we start clearing out classrooms!
