AHE June 2026 Newsletter

Jun 01, 2026

Principal’s Message

June has snuck up so quickly!  At this time of year, we spend time checking our progress on our school goals and thinking about our next steps.

As we enter the final month of the school year, our June focus is Finishing Strong! While there are many exciting events and celebrations ahead, we encourage students to continue demonstrating the habits and attitudes that have supported their success all year long.

Throughout June, students will strengthen and showcase the BC Core Competencies of Communication, Thinking, and Personal & Social Responsibility. Whether they are participating in District Track Meets, performing at the Band Concert, welcoming new families during Kindergarten Orientation, enjoying Water Fun Day, or reflecting on their growth through their Summary of Learning, students will have many opportunities to demonstrate perseverance, collaboration, leadership, and self-reflection.

Finishing strong means continuing to make positive choices, supporting others, embracing challenges, and taking pride in personal growth. We look forward to celebrating all that our students have accomplished while encouraging them to make the most of every learning opportunity right through to the final day of school.

It has been a privilege to work with such a caring and enthusiastic group of students, parents and teachers this year. Wishing everyone within the AHE family an action-packed June and a relaxing summer holiday.

Mrs. Pam Mair

School Goals

Literacy

This year, our literacy goal has been to nurture a love of literacy while employing a data-informed approach to maintain positive outcomes for all learners. We are pleased with the progress students and staff have made toward this goal through a variety of engaging learning opportunities and targeted instructional practices.

Throughout the year, students have participated in school-wide literacy initiatives such as Reading Makes Running, Literacy Day, Buddy Reading, and Battle of the Books. These experiences have helped foster enthusiasm for reading, strengthened literacy skills, and built connections across grade levels.

At the same time, staff have continued to use assessment data to guide instruction and monitor student growth. Professional learning has focused on effective writing strategies and instructional practices that support all learners in developing their reading, writing, and communication skills.

We are proud of the literacy culture that continues to grow within our school community. By combining engaging literacy experiences with intentional, data-informed teaching practices, we are helping students develop the skills, confidence, and enjoyment that support lifelong literacy learning.

Numeracy

This year, our numeracy goal has been to build a thriving mathematical community of learners who can think, communicate, and problem solve. Throughout the year, students have engaged in meaningful mathematical experiences that have helped them develop confidence, perseverance, and a hopefully foster a positive attitude toward math.

School-wide initiatives such as Math Buddy activities and our Numeracy Problem of the Week have encouraged students to collaborate, share their thinking, and tackle challenging problems together. Classes have also explored ways that math connects to everyday life, across the curriculum, and through outdoor learning experiences where students have applied mathematical concepts in authentic, real-world settings.

Staff have continued to collaborate and engage in professional learning focused on effective numeracy instruction and best practices. Together, we are fostering a school culture where students (as well as teachers and parents) see themselves as capable mathematicians and understand that math is all around them.

Social Emotional

This year, our social-emotional learning goal has been to foster a sense of belonging and social awareness within our school community. Through student voice, leadership opportunities at all grade levels, and meaningful involvement in school activities, students have played an active role in shaping our school culture.

We continue to support students in developing skills in peaceful problem solving, self-reflection, and relationship building. By incorporating student interests into clubs, activities, and special events, we are creating a school community where students feel valued, connected, and empowered to contribute.

C.A.R.E.S.

Following C.A.R.E.S. daily at AHE, along with monthly themes and weekly focus, helps students have a shared understanding of how our community supports one another and promotes connectedness. Our staff takes a collective, shared approach to owning all students as their own. Students are recognized daily for following our school-wide expectations with CARES Cards that are handed out by staff members and read out over the morning announcements. Students then “pay it forward” by placing their CARES cards in a collection for one of two foundations chosen: Community Connections and Revelstoke Search and Rescue.

At our final assembly on June 25th at 11:30, representatives from each organization will be in attendance to receive a cheque from AHE.

Well done AHE students!

Reimagining the CARES Matrix

This year, students and staff have been working together to combine the familiar expectations of our CARES Matrix with BC’s Core Competencies. While the CARES Matrix outlines what it means to be a successful member of the Arrow Heights community, the Core Competencies focus on the lifelong skills students need to thrive in school and beyond.

Student voice has been at the heart of this process. Classes have been consulted and have collaborated to identify the connections between our school expectations and the competencies of Communication, Thinking, and Personal & Social Responsibility. A student committee is now working to bring these ideas together into a final product that reflects both the history of CARES and our vision for the future.

We are excited about this meaningful work and look forward to sharing the completed framework with our school community. Stay tuned!

Indigenous Education

At AHE, we continue to make meaningful progress toward our goal of strengthening Indigenous-Informed Pedagogy throughout our school community. Students are deepening their understanding of place and connection through personalized land acknowledgements, outdoor learning experiences, and land-based activities connected to the curriculum.

A key focus this year has been stewardship—learning to care for the land, clean up after ourselves, and give back to our community and environment. Ongoing collaboration with our Indigenous Student Advocate and local Knowledge Keepers has enriched learning through experiences such as local mapping lessons with Lisa Moore and painting with Delree Dumont.

In October, students helped complete the first phase of our Indigenous and native species garden in the courtyard. Future plans include adding QR codes to support learning about local plants, Indigenous cultures, and environmental stewardship. We are proud of the growing connections our students are making to the land, community, and the responsibilities we all share in caring for both.

Go By Bike

May 31-June 5th is Go by Bike Week! Every student can participate by biking, walking or scootering to school. We will be recognizing those getting to school on their own power as well as noticing those following the expectations for bikes on the school ground and bike safety. We have a handful of prizes to be awarded on Friday June 5th.

Water Fun Day

We are excited to once again host our annual Water Fun Day at Williamson’s Lake on June 24th! Students had an incredible time last year enjoying swimming, wide games, the concession, and spending time with friends. A highlight of the day was the mini golf, generously supported by our PAC. This year, thanks to our PAC and our generous volunteers, we will be having a barbeque hot dog lunch.

This fun-filled day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a successful school year and enjoy time together as a school community. More information, including schedules and volunteer opportunities, will be shared closer to the date.

PAC News

It’s been another amazing year at AHE and PAC would like to extend a big thanks to everyone who helped make this year such a success. To our amazing PAC Board and all the volunteers who pitched in at our 10 hot lunches, the Christmas Craft Fair, and the Scholastic Book Fair—thank you! We couldn’t have done it without your time, energy, and support.

We would like to thank Emo’s Pizza, Save on Foods, Kawakubo Sushi and Subway for always supporting our hot lunches and making them all a massive success.

We’re already looking ahead to next year and are looking for new PAC board members! If you love AHE and want to get involved, we’d love to have you join us!

More details, including the time, will be shared in the fall. We hope to see you there!

Thanks everyone for another successful school year. Have a great summer!!!

Our Grade 7 students will be moving on to Revelstoke Secondary next year and we are ready to celebrate their time at Arrow Heights. On June 16th, Arrow Heights will be hosting a Leaving Celebration at 6pm. Our celebration theme is “Beach”. Families are invited to attend to help send these students off to RSS.

Best of luck to all our students in their future endeavors. We will miss you at AHE!

School Organization for 2026-27

As we wind down our school year, we are also busy gearing up for our plans for next year. Due to changing enrolment numbers, we will be working on class organizations and teaching assignments until the end of the year.  We also remind you it is our practice not to publish this information until just before the first day of classes in the new school year. A lot of thought and effort goes into making the classes, and changes in classes cannot be made once they have been posted. Should you have any questions about class organization, please contact Mrs. Mair at 250-837-6360.
