AHE March 2024 Newsletter

Mar 02, 2024

Principal’s message

Spring has sprung! We have just two short weeks leading up to Spring Break, but we have a lot going on!

Our second written learning update will be sent home to families on March 13th. These formal learning updates are intended to be a snapshot of your child’s learning in the moment, rather than an average across the term. Formal written updates are one of the tools used by teachers to communicate growth and progress. Additionally, your child’s teacher may use class newsletters, emails or phone calls to keep you informed of what they are learning.

Upon our return to school after the break, we have student-led conferences on April 17th and 18th, giving our students an opportunity to show off their strengths and share their progress on their learning goals.

As I read the learning profiles before they go home to families, I am reminded of the First People’s Principle: “Learning Takes Patience and Time”. The progress made by all of our students over the course of the year is admirable, and it is important to remember that we all learn at our own pace.

I would like to wish all of our families a restful and happy break.

Mrs. Pam Mair

Breakfast Program

Thank you to our Breakfast Club coordinators, Sarah Koriath and Claire Lawrence who do an amazing job each morning to provide healthy and scrumptious snacks for our students! It is greatly appreciated. You’ll find the breakfast carts outside at the front and side entrances at 8:00am. Once carts are brought inside, they are left in the hallway for the morning, so students can help themselves to snacks throughout the morning.

Hot Lunch

If students forget their lunches or need a bit extra to get through the day, we have frozen lunches available at the office provided by the Community Kitchen. Our Community Kitchen lunches that have been recurring on the first Tuesday of each month will now be taking place on Thursdays. The first one is this Thursday March 7. Students are encouraged to bring utensils and a container.

Battle of the Books

Many AHE students are busy reading some of the ten titles in each age category in preparation for the District Battle of the Books event coming up on Tuesday, March 5. This year, we are hosting the event at Arrow Heights, and top teams will again have the opportunity to travel to Vernon to compete in an Inter-District Battle in April. Huge thanks to Ms. Draboczi for her work in organizing books and teams, and in holding BOB fest events to help students prepare for the district battle!

Kindergarten Registration

So far, we have quite a few Kindergartens registered for the 2024-25 school year. Registrations can be completed online or in person. Please help get the word out!  if you know of any families with children born in 2019, please encourage them to register as knowing how many students to expect helps us with our planning for next year!

Indoor Sports at AHE

Basketball

Basketball season is now over, and our grade 6 and 7 students are to be congratulated for their teamwork, commitment, and sportsmanship. They represented our school well, and we could not be prouder of their growth. Thank you to coaches Mrs. Sara Ediger and Mr. Adam Cadegan and volunteer referees and score keepers who made the games run smoothly!

Cowball

Our second annual Cow Ball round robin tournament is in full swing. Students in grade 4-7 are participating at lunch on teams with students from Ecole des Glaciers. The two schools have been divided into six teams and will participate in a friendly and inclusive dodgeball-esque event.

Smash Ball

Smash Ball starts for grade 6 and 7 students on Thursday, March 7 after school at RSS. Smash Ball is a lead – up to Volleyball, where students play 3 to a team, learning volleyball skills in preparation for full court games. Students will travel by bus to RSS after school but will need to be picked up at the end. Permission slips and more information is available with the grade 6 and 7 teachers. Thank you to Ms. Hall and Mr. Cadegan for being our sponsor teachers!

Winter Fun Day

Well, it wasn’t very wintery, but fun nonetheless. AHE and EDG students spent the afternoon of February 23rd engaged in fun activities outdoors with our buddy classes. Thanks, PAC, for the delicious hot chocolate and EDG for the Maple Syrup on the snow ~ always a crowd favourite!

More Sports!

Ski After School

Nordic Skiing after School finished last week, with approximately 15 of our students taking the bus every Monday to the Nordic Center at Mt. McPherson. This program, sponsored by Stoke Youth and the Nordic Ski Club offered free rentals, lessons and snacks for a total of 6 fun-filled sessions. A great time was had by all!

Indoor Soccer

Grade 2/3 Indoor Soccer offered to our students by volunteer coach and parent, Sarah Vincent took place in the AHE gym on Tuesdays for 5 weeks in December and January. Students had a blast, got some exercise and improved their skills. Thank you for volunteering your time, Ms. Vincent!

Grade 4/5 Basketball

Basketball for grade 4/5 students will get started on Tuesdays in April with volunteer coach and parent, Mark Brown. There are limited spaces, so please return your permission slips to the AHE office. Spaces are limited.

Cell Phones at AHE

Cell phone use in schools has been getting a lot of attention in recent news. Our cell phone policy can be found inside your child’s agenda (see below). Cell phone use gets in the way of important development and learning that happens through socialization and play. We encourage students to remain as active as possible during recess and lunch periods and therefore recommend leaving electronic devices at home. There is a phone for student use at the front office, and messages may be left with our secretary, Mrs. Pendergast, if you would like your child to get in contact with you.

If your child brings their cell phone to school, we ask that it be left in a backpack, locker or with the teacher.

“Electronic devices at school: Cell phones, gaming devices
The school recognizes the need for parents and their children to remain in close contact for safety reasons. Cell phones do however create a distraction for students during class time and we therefore require students to keep cell phones in their lockers during the school day. Please call the school (837-6360) should there be an emergent need to contact your son or daughter.”

The words suggested by the kids will be used to start our continuous, ever-changing Math word wall. Fingers crossed when spring break is over spring will be in the air.   PAC would like to send out a big thank you to all the parents who volunteered on Winter Sports Day and provided hot chocolate and whip cream at a station in the afternoon.  PAC has a few fundraisers that are finishing up this weekend.  Our Art Created by Kids fundraiser:  these orders are due March 4th.  Please don’t forget to send the artwork back to the school so it can be picked up March 6th. Nsylxcin Language Teacher

Ms. Krug, our Indigenous Student Advocate shares the language of the Sinixt over the announcements, during assemblies and in classes. Students also get an opportunity to partake in recess and lunch hour activities to further explore language learning. We now have a unique opportunity to learn Nsylxcin language from a Sinixt Language teacher, Mr. Donovan. Mr. Donovan will be having his second visit to AHE this month, sharing language and the story and meaning behind it.

Bus Safety

School busses are a common sight at the front of the school, whether it be that students are arriving for their day, high school students are catching the bus to RSS, field trips are occurring, or students are heading home at the end of the day. Please be reminded that you cannot pass a bus from behind or from either direction if it is stopped to load or unload children. If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop.

Youth Access Fund

Revelstoke’s Youth Access Fund, (YA Fund) was established in 2014 as a way to ensure all youth have equal opportunity to participate in sports, recreation, arts and cultural programs, events and activities. The YA Fund is designed to help remove financial barriers, (including registration fees, equipment, transportation and other costs associated with participation), for youth from low- and modest-income families to participate in activities that they would otherwise not be able to do. Last year, the YA Fund disbursed upwards of $16 000 and supported 92 youth in Revelstoke. Please reach out if you would like more information about the referral process and how to access the Youth Access Fund.
