AHE February 2026 Newsletter

Feb 02, 2026

February is Kindness Month

Principal’s Message

January was a busy and fun month around the school! Students jumped into new sports and learning activities with lots of enthusiasm, trying new things and having fun along the way. We also had a great time celebrating Family Literacy Day together. A big thank you to the Grizzlies Hockey Team for visiting and sharing their favourite books with our students — it was such a special way to celebrate reading.

This February, our school focus is on kindness, with an emphasis on friendship, sportsmanship, and understanding differences. We’ll be talking with students about how to be a good friend, how to show respect and fairness during games and sports, and how to appreciate what makes each of us unique.

Through everyday moments in classrooms and on the playground, students will have lots of opportunities to practice kind words, inclusive actions, and positive choices. We invite families to join the conversation at home and help us celebrate the small acts of kindness that make our school a great place to be.

Have a fantastic February everyone!

Mrs. Pam Mair

Student Learning Survey 2025/26

The Provincial Student Learning Survey is unique in its scope, size and usefulness to schools. It gathers information from parents/guardians/caregivers, teachers, and students on topics related to school environment, safety, and achievement. The information is used for planning in individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective.

In February of 2026 the Student Learning Survey will be administered to students in grades 4 and 7, their parents/guardians/caregivers, and all school staff. We encourage parents/guardians/caregivers to participate in this survey, as the results are important in identifying and celebrating current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to focus improvement. The surveys contain standard questions for the Province – in addition, questions from the school and/or district that focus on local conditions or issues may be included.

The survey can be completed electronically and can be accessed on the Internet at: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/support/student-learning-survey.

Any computer or mobile device with an Internet connection can be used, and access to the e-survey is simple and secure. The survey can be accessed through the link and by clicking on Take the Survey. On the login page, click on the Parents icon, and then select the school district and school name where your child attends school. Provincial, District and School Reports for previous years can be viewed at the same site under the Results section.

The e-survey site will be open until May 1, 2026. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 250-837-6360.

Riding the School Bus

Just a reminder that if a student does not normally ride the bus and plans to ride to a friend’s house, or if a regular rider would like to get off at a different stop, a written note is required. This helps ensure consistency and student safety and applies to all requests.

School Sports

Ski After School

Our final session for the skiing after school program will take place on Feb 25th.  A great big thank you to all the volunteers, Ms. Draboczi, the Revelstoke Nordic Club and Stoke Youth Network.  This is a very popular program and all the students have had such an amazing time.  Thanks so much everyone for making this happen!

Basketball

What a great start we have had to our inter school basketball league.  We have 3 more games left to play in February before the Tournament on February 26 at RSS. Go Arrow Heights Go!

A great big Thank You to Mr. Cadegan, Ms. Gauer, Ms. Butler and Ms. Draboczi for coaching, and Mr. Hooker for volunteering his time as referee.

Nordic Skiing

Our Grade 4 students have been having a great time getting out on the trails for Nordic skiing at the Nordic Centre on Mt. McPherson. They’ve been building confidence, learning new skills, and enjoying time outdoors together. We’re looking forward to two more skiing sessions in February and can’t wait to see how much they continue to grow on their skis!

Ski/Snowboard Program at RMR

Our Grade 3 students have wrapped up their three sessions of downhill skiing and snowboarding at RMR and had a fantastic time on the slopes! Up next, it’s the Grade 6 students’ turn to hit the hills for three Mondays in February — we can’t wait to see them enjoying the snow, building skills, and having fun together. Please remember to send your child with a helmet and goggles if possible, as well as an extra pair of mitts or gloves and lots of snacks! They’ll be working hard!

Curling

Our Grade 7 students are excited to try something new — curling at the Revelstoke Curling Club! They’ll be taking part in two sessions on the first two Mondays in February, learning the basics of this fun and challenging sport while working together as a team on the ice. Students are reminded to wear stretchy clothing for curling!

Numeracy News!

Building Number Sense Through Estimation

Estimation is a powerful skill that helps students develop number sense, an important part of the BC Math Curriculum. When students practice estimating, they learn to make reasonable guesses, check their thinking, and better understand the size and scale of numbers in everyday life.

At home, families can support estimation with fun, simple activities:

Guess how many candies are in a jar before counting.
Estimate the time it will take to walk to the mailbox or complete a small task.
Round prices at the grocery store and estimate the total of items in your cart.

These small moments give students practice thinking flexibly about numbers, building confidence and critical thinking skills that will help them in school and everyday life.

Pancake Tuesday

Start your morning with something sweet — our staff will be flipping pancakes in the gym on Tuesday, Feb.

17! Students are invited to come at 8:00 a.m. for a yummy breakfast and some morning fun. Don’t miss it!

Winter Fun Day/Jersey Day

Weather permitting, we’re planning a Winter Fun Day on Thursday, February 20! Students will have the chance to enjoy outdoor activities, games, and snowy adventures with their classmates. Fingers crossed for snow and sunshine — it’s going to be an afternoon full of fun and fresh air

Remember to dress in jerseys for the day!

Green Thumb Theatre

We are excited to host Green Thumb Theatre’s production of 500 WORDS by Jamie Norris on Thursday, February 26th at 8:45 a.m. This play is about literacy, the power of imagination, and the joy of reading and explores themes including Friendship, Literacy, Creativity, Learning Disabilities. Parents are welcome to join us in the AHE gym to enjoy the presentation.

About the show:

When Lance’s teacher assigns him Sylvia as a reading buddy, he would rather focus on writing a prize-winning entry for the school’s story competition. But when Lance can’t think of a story on his own, it’s Sylvia’s vibrant imagination that creates a whole world of magic for him to draw inspiration from. Learning together, Sylvia starts to overcome her fear of reading, and Lance learns that the biggest word isn’t always the smartest word, and that you really can’t judge a person until you get to know them.

Coming Up!

Egg Drop Challenge

Get ready for some egg-citing fun! Students are invited to build a contraption at home to keep an egg safe when dropped from the roof of AHE at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2. Participation is optional, but there will be plenty of collaboration and idea-sharing at school during the week of March 30 – April 2. Be creative, think like an engineer, and let’s see whose egg survives the drop!

AHE’s Got Talent!

Mark your calendars for March 12th (time TBD). Back by popular demand, we will be holding our 3rd annual AHE’s Got Talent Show.  Entry forms are available in classrooms and at the office and are due back on Feb. 27th. Auditions will be held on March 2nd and 3rd to allow organizers to pre-view acts to assist with planning. Entry to the talent show will be by donation with proceeds going to one of the two societies we are supporting:  Revelstoke Search and Rescue and Community Connections.

Earth Day Clothing Swap April 22

In celebration of Earth Day, we’re hosting a clothing swap! Students are invited to bring in gently used clothing (maybe items that are too small or no longer needed) and swap them for something “new-to-them.” It’s a fun way to reuse, recycle, and refresh our wardrobes while helping the planet. Start gathering your items and get ready to swap! More information to come!

Battle of The Books

Battle of the Books is a great opportunity to improve reading skills and take part in team activities while building camaraderie and working on common goals. There is a lot of enthusiasm for reading at AHE as students work their way to our school competition, BOBFEST, taking place at the end of February. Students who have read at least one book on the list can join a team. While BOBFEST is about celebrating literacy and participating in fun activities, the District Battle of the Books (Thursday, March 5th) is a bit more serious: our students compete against teams from BVE and CPE to see who can answer challenging questions about the books. To be eligible for Battle of the Books, students need to finish at least 5 of the books on their age- appropriate list. Parents and caregivers are invited to watch and cheer for their young readers in BOBFEST and Battle off the Books.

PAC News

Can you believe how quickly January has flown by? We’re already gearing up for another exciting month ahead!

Ping Pong Fun! 🏓

We are loving our new Ping Pong tables, generously provided by the PAC! They’ve been a fantastic way for students to stay active and have fun during our drizzly January days. Starting in February, we’ll have a schedule for intermediate students to enjoy games during recess and lunch — more chances to rally, spin, and have a great time with friends!

PAUSE

Parents as Ultimate Supporters and Educators for Mental Health.

Similar to our POPS and PALS programs, PAUSE is a program offered to grade 5 students across the district. PAUSE is designed to assist students (with the support of the adults in their life) to learn strategies to manage worries. The students are learning strategies during class and would like to include parent involvement on the afternoons of February 9th and 27th from 12:00-2:00. We hope you can join us for pizza lunch and some fun exploration together.

Pre-K Play

Calling all kids born in 2021! We are inviting you to come and spend a fun filled time in our Kindergarten classes on February 26th from 4:00-5:00. This is a great way to meet future classmates, teaches and get used to the school environment.
