October 2023 AHE Newsletter
WELCOME OCTOBER!
Principal’s Message:
The first month of school has just flown by and we have a busy month of October to look forward to. Goal-setting conferences, the Scholastic book fair, the Halloween haunted house and the Halloween costume parade are just a few of the school wide events taking place at AHE.
As a school, we are focusing on First Peoples’ Principles of learning to deepen thinking and connection across the curriculum. We also continue to fine tune our focus areas in literacy and numeracy.
Classes are in full swing learning, taking advantage of outdoor classroom spaces and great field trips that allow us to extend learning outside the formal class setting. We have much to be thankful for this month.
Mrs. Pam Mair

School News
Terry Fox Run
Thank you AHE families for donating Toonies for Terry Fox. We raised $768 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Goal Setting Conferences
Goal Setting conferences are being held on October 25-26th with some additional after school times to accommodate all families. Dismissal will be at 12:30 on these days.
The BOOK FAIR is also on Wednesday & Thursday October 25 & 26th.
Cross Country Running
The Cross-Country Running Team is having a great season. Many students in the Grade 4-7 classes are participating and are having a great time running outdoors. Our next race will be held this Thursday October 5th at CPE, and the season ends on Oct. 12 with a run at Nels Nelson Loop. A big thank you to Mrs. Macleod, Ms. Johnson and our parent helpers for your support.
Thanksgiving Lunch and Dessert
On Friday October 6th, the entire Arrow Heights Elementary community will be meeting in the gym at lunch to give thanks for our many blessings as a school. Our PAC has graciously offered to provide our dessert (pumpkin or apple pie). Please remember to send a fork with your child’s lunch on this day. We are very grateful for what we have here at AHE. THANK YOU TO ALL!
School Fruit and Vegetable and Milk Program
We are once again offering the BC School Fruit and Vegetable program supported by the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation. By participating in this free program, we expect our students will gain knowledge of the health benefits of local fruits and vegetables.
Costume Parade and Dance
Our annual costume parade will be held in the gym at 11:15 am on October 31. All parents are welcome to attend and check out the costumes. Students are welcome to dress up for Halloween.
Haunted House
There will be some spookiness happening on October 27th, as our Gr. 7 classes turn our gym into a Haunted House for the community. This is a fun fundraiser for our Gr. 7 crew. The Haunted House will run from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Be there to be scared! As always, scariness can be toned down on request.
Head Lice
Head lice is common in school-aged children. Head lice DO NOT cause disease. Itchiness from head lice can be irritating and uncomfortable for children. Head Lice spread easily to others, so it’s important for families to help prevent and control its spread. Outbreaks are more common following vacations. How to Prevent Head Lice:
- Please check your child’s head every week for head lice
- Teach your child not to share head gear (i.e. hats, hair accessories, scarves, helmets, combs)
If you would like more information on head lice and treatment, please call the school, a Public Health Nurse at your Health Centre/Unit or go to www.interiorhealth.ca
Badminton Season
Badminton Season will be starting in October for any Grade 6 and 7 students interested in playing. Tournament dates will be held in November. If you enjoy playing badminton or know of someone who does, please stay tuned for the student information meetings coming up. Go AHE Go!
Parent Advisory Council
Crisp weather and bright days! Welcome to October, and all the great events at AHE this month.
Elections are being held at our PAC AGM meeting on Tuesday October 3, at 6:30 pm in the AHE Library. All parents and caregivers are welcome to come out and participate in this process, it was so inspiring to see many new parents at our last meeting. This month, in addition to elections, various committees will be formed. These include a Hot Lunch Committee and a Christmas Craft Fair Committee.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, so is our first hot lunch on Friday, Oct. 6. This one is a little different than the other hot lunches as we don’t provide lunch but do provide yummy apple and pumpkin pie with whipped cream thanks to the generous donation from Save -On Foods.
Another fun event this month is our Scholastic Book Fair happening at the same time as Family Conferences Oct. 25 & 26th. Parents will find a volunteer request for this event in your kid’s planner in the next week or so.
Our PAC events can’t happen without our parent volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering at any event or have any fundraising ideas or suggestions, please feel free to contact Suzy at pacarrowheights@gmail.com. Happy Thanksgiving and have a great October.
