February is Kindness Month

Principal’s Message

I can’t believe it’s February! January sped past us, as staff and students at A.H.E. kept busy with continued learning and amazing winter activities! A special Thank You goes out to all the volunteers who share their time supporting our students in trying something new. The sportsmanship and enthusiasm shown by our students out in the community makes us proud!

We had a great day celebrating Family Literacy with PJ and Favourite Book Day on Jan. 29th. Members of the Revelstoke Grizzlies joined us to share in reading their favourite Robert Munsch books!

In true CARES fashion, we will continue to focus on fostering respect, cooperation, and friendship with our schoolwide focus for February: Kindness. Pink Shirt Day on February 28th reminds us of the importance of random acts of kindness: standing up for a friend, supporting someone in need, or simply saying “Hi”!

Have a fantastic February everyone!

Mrs. Pam Mair

After School Skiing

Our final session for the skiing after school program will take place on Feb 26.  A great big thank you to all the volunteers, teachers, Revelstoke Nordic Club and Stoke Youth Network.  This is a very popular program and all the students have had such an amazing time.  Thanks so much everyone for making this happen!

Basketball

What a great start we have had to our inter school basketball league.  We have 3 more games left to play in February before the Tournament on February 22 at RSS. Go Arrow Heights Go!

A great big Thank You to Mr. Cadegan and Ms. Bieniada for coaching, and Mr. Brown for volunteering his time.  We are still in need of referees for the final games. Please send me an email if you can help!

February PAC News

January seemed to fly by.  PAC held a Subway hot lunch as well as a successful movie night.  Thanks to all the parents who volunteered and to the families that supported the movie night.  PAC will be hosting an Emo’s hot lunch on Thursday Feb. 15th. You will find order forms in the kiddo’s planners soon.  We will also be providing hot chocolate for the Winter Fun Day on February 23rd.  We will need volunteers for each event, please reach out to PAC @ pacarrowheights@gmail.com if you are able to volunteer for either event.  We are hosting our monthly PAC meeting this Monday, February 5th at 6:30pm in the AHE library,  with child care provided in the gym.

Kindergarten Registration

If you have a child or know of someone with a child born in 2019, you are encouraged to register your child for Kindergarten. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Claire Pendergast @ 250 837-6360.

Numeracy News!

Thank you to those who participated in the Problem of the Month for January! Out of the correct responses, two primary and two intermediate student names were drawn to receive a prize! Prizes include dice games, rulers, dominos and big foamy dice. The February Numeracy Problem is below for Primary and Intermediate. Entry forms can be found at the display case in the front entryway.

This month’s numeracy routine is SPLAT!

Splat is an instructional routine that can be used at any grade level.

The simple premise is that a set of dots is shown on a screen. A “splat” or blob covers some of the dots. The total number of dots is in displayed in the upper right-hand corner. In the case where there are multiple SPLATS! The number under each blob is the same. The question is: “How many dots have been covered by the splat?” At higher levels, multiple splats appear, and fuel understanding of equations, remainders, variables, and eventually fractions.

Intermediate SPLAT!

Battle of The Books

Battle of the Books is a great opportunity to improve reading skills and take part in team activities while building camaraderie and working on common goals. There is a lot of enthusiasm for reading at AHE as students work their way to our school competition – BOBFEST, taking place at the end of February. Students who have read at least one book on the list can join a team. While BOBFEST is about celebrating literacy and participating in fun activities, the District Battle of the Books (Tuesday, March 5th) is a bit more serious: our students compete against teams from BVE and CPE to see who can answer challenging questions about the books. To be eligible for Battle of the Books, students need to finish at least 5 of the books on their age- appropriate list. Parents and caregivers are invited to watch and cheer for their young readers in BOBFEST and Battle off the Books.

PAUSE  – Parents as Ultimate Supporters and Educators for Mental Health.

Similar to our POPS and PALS programs, PAUSE is a program offered to grade 5 students across the district. PAUSE is designed to assist students (with the support of the adults in their life) to learn strategies to manage worries. The students are learning strategies during class and would like to include parent involvement on the afternoons of February 21st and March 6 from 12:00-2:00. We hope you can join us!
